What would be an insight you could provide the room with working with professional athletes?
If somebody wants to add an athlete to their board, work with an athlete as an investor, client, or partner, is there any insight you could provide to the room on that?
Yeah, get ready to work through walls. I'll tell you that. There's a lot of people that just look at athletes for money, right? And so there are all these blockades. When you get introduced to an athlete, you have to go through the manager, then you have to go through the agent, probably then you have to go through the second manager, and then you're probably going to have to talk to the mom, right?
So, there are all these layers you have to get through, but the reality is everything is built on trust. Trust and relationship-building. If you don’t look at the athlete or whoever with a big dollar sign, but you're really authentically trying to, you know, provide value, that’s usually the best way to work with athletes. Right?
Great. And something there I’m interested in — I think one of the things I’ve seen a big change in the last few years, even in the last year, is the investing in sports teams. There’s a big fund called Octos; they do it — I’m not especially with them, but they invest in a lot of teams. I’m seeing now one of my good friends from the Warriors (he used to be there) who’s got his own venture fund. I just heard Carmelo Anthony has his venture fund now.
You’re seeing now where the NBA has opened up the ability to invest. I think you’re going to see more of that in terms of funds being invested in the NFL pretty soon, Major League Baseball, and so forth. So, you know, sports teams have been going up dramatically in the last 10 years, partly because it’s the one thing people watch live now — probably because of TV and so forth — and those rights offerings just keep going up and up and up.
So, that is the one area that people now can find a way to invest in, whereas a few years ago, it was only for the very extremely rich people who could invest in sports teams.
