Delhi's Connaught Place (CP) is the beating heart of the city, capturing its commercial, cultural, and historical essence. Its colourful streets and unique circular design have made it famous, and is considered iconic not just in Delhi but all across India. The area is instantly recognisable on any map of Delhi as a big circle in the middle with radial roads spreading out in all directions.
In what was a jungle during it's early days, Connaught Place was built by the British in the early 20th century between 1929 and 1933. Robert Tor Russell designed it with inspiration from Bath, England's Royal Crescent. Connaugh Place was named after British royal family member Duke of Connaught Prince Arthur. He was the third son of Queen Victoria and uncle of King George VI of the United Kingdom, who visited India in 1921
Connaught Place is divided into blocks, each with its own set of owners, unlike modern commercial properties. The primary custodian of this iconic space is the Government of India, as it owns the land on which CP is located. Nonetheless, different people and families own the buildings in CP. Early commercial establishments belonged to traders from the Kashmere Gate area: Harnarain Gopinath (Harnarains), Kanter's, Galgotia and Snowhite
