Two astronomical events on August 30, 2023, will attract the attention of skywatchers around the world. The first one is a supermoon, which occurs when the Full Moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit, making it appear larger and brighter than usual. The second one is a Blue Moon, which is the second Full Moon in a calendar month. This combination of a Supermoon and a Blue Moon is very rare and has not happened since January 2018. The Super Blue Moon will peak at 9:36 p.m. UTC (7:06 a.m. IST on August 31). To observe this spectacular event, look for the Moon in the eastern sky after sunset or before sunrise, depending on your location. You may also notice that the Moon has a slightly reddish hue due to the Earth's atmosphere scattering blue light more than red light.
