On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a significant milestone in India's transportation infrastructure – a 17-kilometer segment of the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) on the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor. The larger RRTS corridor spans 82.15 kilometers, with this 17-kilometer stretch between Sahibabad and Duhai Depot now open for public use.
This project, previously known as "RapidX," was officially renamed "Namo Bharat" by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. The decision to rebrand the RRTS trains aligns with its significance in fulfilling the aspirations of millions of people in the region.
The newly operational priority section of the RRTS boasts five stations: Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai, and Duhai Depot. With this train service, the travel time between Sahibabad and Duhai Depot has been reduced to just 12 minutes, a considerable improvement over the typical 30-35 minute road journey.
This project is part of a broader initiative that includes eight RRTS corridors planned for development in the National Capital Region (NCR). Among these, three corridors, including the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Corridor, have been prioritized for implementation in Phase-I. Subsequent corridors, such as Delhi-Gurugram-SNB-Alwar and Delhi-Panipat, are set to follow this pioneering project.
For commuters, the ticket fare for the priority section between Sahibabad and Duhai Depot is ₹50 for Standard Class and ₹100 for Premium Class.
The RRTS is developed by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), a joint venture involving the governments of India, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, at a cost exceeding ₹30,000 crore. This transportation network aims to connect Delhi to Meerut in under an hour, passing through urban centers like Ghaziabad, Muradnagar, and Modinagar. Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation for this 82.15-kilometer-long corridor in March 2019, with an anticipated completion date in 2025.
Key features of the RRTS include state-of-the-art technology and passenger amenities. Trains are equipped with overhead luggage racks, CCTV cameras, emergency door-opening mechanisms, push-button features, Wi-Fi, and charging facilities for mobile phones and laptops at every seat. Each train comprises six coaches, with one being a premium coach offering wider seats, extra legroom, and coat hangers. Additionally, one coach in every train is reserved for women and is situated adjacent to the premium coach.
The RRTS trains are also designed to accommodate patients, with one general coach in each train featuring space for a medical stretcher and a wheelchair.
Notably, this system will provide high-speed intercity trains for commuters, with a train scheduled every 15 minutes, which can be increased to every five minutes if needed. The RRTS is expected to outperform conventional railways, offering reliable, high-frequency, point-to-point regional travel with fewer stops and higher speeds, particularly suitable for passengers traveling longer distances.
