Sri Lanka Economic Crisis Live Today: Hours after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country, thousands of protesters descended onto the streets, marching toward Parliament and the Prime Minister's house. Soldiers along the roads were seen to be offering water to the protesters. Protesters in Sri Lanka's Colombo gathered around 200 m away from Parliament. They are demanding the immediate resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapakse, who fled the country early in the morning.
Sri Lanka has declared a state of emergency after the President fled the country. Police fired tear gas to scatter protesters near Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s office hours after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country. The President, his wife and two bodyguards left aboard a Sri Lankan Air Force plane bound for the city of Male, the capital of the Maldives. Though Rajapaksa had agreed to step down under pressure, Sri Lanka’s Parliamentary Speaker is yet to receive the President’s resignation letter.
