On this day in 1994, a mortar shell fired by the Army of Republika Srpska exploded in the busy Markale market in Sarajevo, killing at least 67 people and injuring over 140. This was one of the deadliest crimes committed during the siege of Sarajevo. During the 42-month long siege, the Markale market was shelled twice, causing numerous civilian casualties.
