The Tamil Nadu government has issued orders to form a Fact Check Unit (FCU), with 80 staff members, to deal with “misinformation and disinformation pertaining to the state government” emerging from “all media platforms”. The Centre-run Press Information Bureau (PIB) already has a fact-checking division. The Karnataka government is looking at a similar one. Here comes the twist — the governments appear to be the sole arbitrators. Is free speech being curbed? Are citizens’ rights being trod on?
