Japanese emperor Naruhito has ascended to the Chrysanthemum Throne as the 126th ruler of his dynasty, and arguably Japan's first modern monarch. The ascension of the 59-year-old emperor, following the abdication of his father Akihito on Tuesday, means the country has now entered the "Reiwa" era (meaning "beautiful harmony") in Japan's Imperial calendar. In a brief 5-minute ceremony, Naruhito received the imperial regalia, the seals of state, a sword called Kusanagi and the jewel known as Yasakani no Magatama. These treasures, which are kept in boxes and never seen by the public, are the physical symbols of the emperor's rule. Only male members of the imperial family were allowed to attend the ceremony. Fourty minutes after the ceremony, the new emperor spoke at this first audience, wishing for people's happiness, the further development of the nation, as well as peace of the world.
