MANHATTAN, Kan. — Dan Skillings Jr. had a season-high 18 points, but No. 16 Cincinnati committed a season-high 15 turnovers and fought with a chance to win in the final minute before falling at Kansas State, 70-67, in the Big 12 opener for both teams Monday night.
Skillings' acrobatic left-handed layup at 7:23 trimmed K-State's lead to 54-51. Jizzle James' swipe of a loose ball and ensuing layup and free-throw made it a 56-54 game, and Dillon Mitchell's tap-in tied it at 56 for the first time since 19:12 of the half.
Aziz Bandaogo's tip-in with 1:09 left brought UC back within 63-61, but a tough K-State fadeaway outside the paint gave it a cushion. Bandaogo scored again with 27 seconds left, but an offensive rebound on a free-throw led to two more Wildcat foul shots and a 68-63 lead.
Cincinnati (10-2, 0-1 Big 12) fought off six turnovers to stay within 18-17 at the 6:44 media timeout. Dillon Mitchell's pair of triples, his first-career game with multiple makes, kept Cincinnati in the game.
Skillings' drive from the wing and left-handed slam put him on the board with 4:20 left. His subsequent short, contested jumper and 3-pointer from the corner gave UC its first lead of the game (27-26) at 2:34, prompting a K-State timeout after Skillings' personal 7-0 run.
As the Wildcats matched their largest lead of the night at 43-34, Skillings helped close the gap with his third triple of the night at 14:56. He entered the night 3-for-15 from deep as he overcame a six-game injury absence, a promising image as UC's leading scorer last year.
FROM WES MILLER
"I'm disappointed in the outcome. They did a nice job at making us uncomfortable offensively. We turned it over 15 times, which frustrates me a lot, but you always have to give the opponent some credit for that...you look down at the nights Coleman Hawkins and Dug McDaniel had, they're pretty special for them. We'll be frustrated watching the film, but hats off to those guys. I thought our group showed some character to dig in and tie the game, but we couldn't sustain it and turn the corner."
FROM DAN SKILLINGS
"I am looking to play my role and try to get the win as a team together. I got into a little rhythm, but I thought I could have done a better job at rebounding, and that's one of my specialties. I didn't do that tonight."
NOTABLE
-Cincinnati had won eight-straight in the series, which began with three NCAA Tournament games from 1958-61 and includes a First Round victory in 2017.
-UC had entered the night without allowing 70 points in a game yet, its longest streak since 2018-19.
-Dillon Mitchell produced his third double-double of the year with 15 points and 11 rebounds, both season-highs. He also went 2-for-4 from deep, his first multi-trey game of his career.
