GOJU SHI HO DAI – SLOW & FAST | Shōtōkan Karate Kata

The two Gojū shi ho are the highest Kata of the Shuri te.
Gojū shi ho dai is also practiced in the styles Shōrin-ryū and Shitō-ryū.
The often repeated sequences of the three Ippon nukite, which are performed quickly one after the other, remind of a woodpecker knocking against a tree with its beak. For this reason the Kata was called "Hotaku" by Funakoshi, which means something like woodpecker knocking. The current name (Gojū shi ho dai = 54 steps, large) indicates the number of steps in the Kata.

In addition, this Kata is characterized by the strengthening of the leg muscles as well as dynamically short technique sequences.

Further with this Kata, as well as with her "sister" Gojū shi ho shō, the exact gaze turns are to be considered, since these form additionally the character of both Gojū shi ho Kata, particularly in the first third.

Die beiden Gojū shi ho sind die höchsten Kata des Shuri te.
Gojū shi ho dai wird auch in den Stilen Shōrin-ryū und Shitō-ryū praktiziert.
Die oft wiederholten Abfolgen der drei Ippon nukite, die schnell hintereinander ausgeführt werden, erinnern an einen Specht, der mit seinem Schnabel gegen einen Baum klopft. Aus diesem Grund wurde die Kata von Funakoshi "Hotaku" genannt, was so viel bedeutet wie Spechtklopfen. Der heutige Name (Gojū shi ho dai = 54 Schritte, groß) weist auf die Anzahl der Schritte in der Kata hin.

Außerdem zeichnet sich diese Kata durch die Kräftigung der Beinmuskulatur sowie durch dynamisch kurze Technikfolgen aus.

Weiterhin sind bei dieser Kata, wie auch bei ihrer "Schwester" Gojū shi ho shō, die exakten Blickwendungen zu beachten, da diese zusätzlich den Charakter beider Gojū shi ho Kata bilden, besonders im ersten Drittel.
