STORYLINE:
About 60 years after Nazi officers looted an extensive collection of Old Masters in the Netherlands, one of the paintings was returned Thursday to the owner's heir.
The heir, Marei von Saher, said she was elated to get the painting back.
She is the sole living heir of Jacques Goudstikker, the foremost collector
and dealer of Old Masters in the Netherlands before World War II.
Von Saher, who lives in Greenwich, Connecticut, was married to Goudstikker's son.
The painting, by Dutch pre-Renaissance artist J. W. de Cock, is entitled
"The Temptation of St. Anthony."
It was voluntarily returned by the estate of Hertha Katz after Christie's auction house learned that the painting had been stolen.
The oil, painted in 1520, was to have been sold by Christie's this past
January.
But prior to auction it was identified as a lost Goudstikker and
removed from sale.
It had been estimated that it would sell for dlrs 15,000 to dlrs 20,000.
Measuring 14 inches (36-centimeters) by 12 inches (30 centimeters), in
deep tones of green and brown, it depicts St. Anthony holding a Bible and sitting in the wilderness with animals.
