TYPES OF HYMEN....
1. Annular:
The typical shape, like a donut, surrounds the vaginal opening at birth & then changes into a crescent shape.
2. Crescentic:
The typical shape, like a "U," is located at the bottom of the vaginal opening. In rare cases, it fully covers the vaginal opening & causes complications.
3. Fimbriated or denticular:
It looks like a finger like projection. Associating with external ridges, oestrogen can cause the hymen to thicken & also increase in width.
4. Redundant or Sleeve:
The thin membrane across the opening of the female vagina is thicker & appears rolled or folded in itself like a sleeve. It may protrude in some women due to their oestrogen levels. It doesn't cause any symptoms in most women; however, some women may experience difficulty inserting tampons, having intercourse, or undergoing pap testing.
5. Septate:
Females have 2 visible vaginal openings instead of 1, due to a thin extra band of tissue that runs through the middle. Females may experience difficulty inserting or removing tampons or having intercourse. A minor surgical correction is needed to correct it.
6. Cibriform:
Hymens has several very small openings. Menstrual blood & vaginal mucus can flow out of the vagina, but the woman will be unable to use tampons or have intercourse; she might experience painful sex.
7. Microperforate:
Hymens have very small openings. Menstrual blood & vaginal mucus can flow out of the vagina, but the woman will be unable to use tampons or have intercourse; she might experience painful sex. If she is able to place a tampon in her vagina, it may be hard for her to remove it.
8. Imperforate:
Hymen fails to open up & therefore completely closes the vaginal openings, blocking menstrual blood & vaginal mucus from flowing out. It is noted at birth but completely discovered during puberty by the absence of menstrual blood or pain in the abdominal or pelvic region due to a vagina filled with blood that cannot exit. Girls or women may also experience urinary frequency, urgency, or a feeling of incomplete voiding.
