Ganeshotsav is one of the most popular Hindu festivals. Ganesha, the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati, is widely worshipped as the supreme god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune and is revered as a remover of obstacles..
It was in 1893 when Lokmanya Balgangadhar Tilak gave a public form to the celebration of the festival of Ganpati and made it a genuinely people's festival.This festival has managed to re-establish the unity among the Indians during British Era.

Tilak recognized the wide appeal of the deity Ganesh as "the god for everybody", and popularized Ganesh Chaturthi as a national festival in order "to bridge the gap between rich and poor and find a context in which to build a new grassroots unity between them", and generate nationalistic fervor among people in Maharashtra against the British colonial rule.
From this year we take the pride to establish Toronto Ganeshotsav Mitra Mandal which will be celebrating Ganesh festivals commencing on 1st Sept. 2011 to bring people from different background together and share their thoughts and interests.

There are many festivals which are primarily celebrated by specific sects or in certain regions of the Indian subcontinent.
Ganesha, also known as Ganapati, Vinayaka, or by numerous other names, is one of the bestknown and most worshipped deities in the Hindu pantheon. His image is found throughout India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Fiji, Thailand, Mauritius, Bali (Indonesia) and Bangladesh. Hindu denominations worship him regardless of affiliations. Devotion to Ganesha is widely diffused and extends to Jains and Buddhists.

The Mahabharata is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, the other being the Ramayana. It narrates the struggle between two groups of cousins in the Kurukshetra War and the fates of the Kaurava and the Pandava princes and their succession. Along with the epic Ramayana, it forms the Hindu Itihasa.
