Yesterday, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine alongside Atterony General Dave Yost announced his plan to reform Ohio’s 800+ law enforcement agencies. Earlier this week, I spoke to Toledo Police Chief George Kral about his plan to reform the TPD. I reached out the chief for a statement on the governor’s plan and this was his response:
“I am always in support of legislation and reform that improves police transparency and legitimacy. When I listened to the legislation presented by Governor DeWine and AG Yost yesterday, I was pleased that Toledo Police have proactively accomplished much of the new legislation. TPD already requires officer candidates to pass both written and verbal psychological tests. We also already have body-worn cameras for our Field Operations officers and are working on securing a grant to purchase body cameras for specialized units and command officers. Biased-Based Profiling is addressed in our department manual Section 103.10. We also provide our Bias-Free Policing Reports, along with an Analysis of Use of Force, at Toledopolice.com underneath the “Inside TPD” and then “Transparency” tab. Toledo Police do not permit chokeholds – they are not listed as an approved response to action anywhere in TPD’s manual. I see this new legislation as an opportunity to improve police service and community relationships all over Ohio and look forward to its implementation.”
