It reminded me.... slightly over a month ago I was in New York City at Ground Zero and I was struck by the similarity of the impression of my feelings and then I realised why. STORYLINE:
Italian Defence Minister Antonio Martino was in Nasiriyah on Thursday visiting the wounded following the bombing of the Italian Carabinieri paramilitary police headquarters, in which 18 Italians and 8 Iraqis died.
Visibly shaken, he said the scene reminded him of New York's Ground Zero following the terrorist attacks of September 11 2001.
But he vowed that Italy and its allies would not be cowed by terrorists.
As investigators sifted through the wreckage on Thursday, General Carlo Cabigiosu, military adviser to the Italian Mission in Iraq, said Italy's intent remained unchanged.
"We are here for a peacekeeping mission and we will keep our contact with the local population in order to achieve our objectives," said Cabigiosu.
Wednesday's blast from the estimated 290 kilograms (650 pounds) of explosives collapsed all three stories of the building, gouged a 2-metre-deep (6-foot-deep) crater in front of it, and set fire to parked cars.
About 80 people - 20 of them Italians- were wounded.
Cabigiosu said the injured were still in Iraq until a final search of the site had been completed.
Witnesses said a decoy car ran a roadblock in front of a square where the Italian barracks was located.
Guards opened fire but as the vehicle sped away, the fuel tanker approached from the opposite direction and rammed into the gate of the building before exploding.
The attack - the worst combat loss for Italy since World War II and its first in the Iraq campaign - was the 13th vehicle bombing in Iraq since the 7th of August when a car exploded at the Jordanian Embassy in Baghdad, killing at least 19 people.
