The first car that Benz built, or anyone built was on a three wheel chassis with tiller steering. It fit two adults, or one mother and her two children on its famous 180 kilometer first ever road trip by Mrs Bertha Benz. On this drive she used a hat pin to clean a carburetor jet and a garter to fix a belt. No big deal for an inventor's wife, I'm sure.
It used a compact high-speed single-cylinder four-stroke engine horizontally mounted at the rear of a tubular steel frame, connected to the differential and three wire-spoked wheels. The output was 0.75 HP. Details included an automatic intake slide, a controlled exhaust valve, high-voltage electrical vibrator ignition with spark plug, and water/thermo siphon evaporation cooling.
