Towering high above Route 40 connecting the rest of Israel to the southern city of Mitzpeh Ramon are the archaeological ruins of Avdat - once a thriving Nabatean town that afforded ancient merchants a commanding view over an incense and spice trading route connecting Gaza and Petra.
Today the site is a national park containing the remains of the city as it existed at various historical periods (with remains dating from both the initial Nabatean settlement and after it was integrated into the Roman Empire).
