Until 1994 South Africa was ruled by the apartheid system, which almost completely separated white people from the rest of the population. Where black people lived, worked and socialised was strictly controlled - and schools were entirely segregated.
But when students were told that they were going to be taught in Afrikaans, a protest started that would change South African history forever.
