Debris from the tip of the Santa Cruz Wharf visible here in the water off the Santa Cruz, California Beach Boardwalk. Amid rough surf and a King Tide, part of the wharf fell into the water. The weather from large storms in the North Pacific fouled the plans of both tourists and locals, but more importantly, one died and at least three had to be rescued: Video starts with debris from the wharf that broke off on this day in Santa Cruz, California visible in the surf. The damage, by what were once rare occurrences, is evident as water pushed by huge waves from the Pacific coupled with abnormally high tides create damage along an iconic stretch of seashore. One man died in debris on nearby Sunset Beach, but apparently NOT the debris from the pier. It fell into the water along with two engineers and a Santa Cruz city official inspecting it. Two were rescued and one swam to safety. Warnings were issued to stay away from the water as large amounts of debris posed a hazard to both people and property. The popular Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk shut down, disappointing visitors as seen in this video, with children hoping for a day at the carnival instead greeted by locked gates.
