The 1988 Camel Trophy was held on the wild Indonesian island of Sulawasi, which offers a route guaranteed to try men and vehicles as never before.
Teams covered thirteen hundred spine-jolitng miles over wild terrain, some of which had never been traversed by vehicle before.

They were set special tasks designed to test their driving skill and navigation while the ever present mud and dust tested their guts, stamina and staying power - in temperatures often as high as 45ºC.
Of the hundreds of thousands of hopefuls who apply for selection as entrants, only 2 per cent qualify. Britain’s hopefuls Marc Day and Jim Benson were selected fron a 51-strong contingent representing finalists from 12 countries who spent a gruelling three days at a training and assessment course at Eastnor in the UK.
The UK team was up against equally tough opposition. All were driving special Land Rovers - all identically
prepared - so it was down to team skill and effort - not forgetting sheer guts!
