Killing Whales - Iceland is one of only three nations in the world to hunt whales. The practice draws international criticism, but its proponents argue it is sustainable and part of the country’s cultural heritage.

“It’s resource utilisation for me. Healthy stocks. Why shouldn’t we utilise them?” So says Kristjan Loftsson, Iceland’s unofficial whaling king. His ships hunt fin whales: the species is endangered, yet the International Whaling Commission considers Iceland’s stocks healthy and so in 2006 granted the country exemption from a 30-year moratorium. Loftsson, however, remains a highly controversial figure. “People like him think they can get away with anything”, says Josh Riley of international NGO Sea Shepherd. “He just does not care.” Yet Sea Shepherd’s sometimes ruthless tactics have led to some branding them as ‘environmental terrorists’. “These are vicious groups”, says Loftsson. “They will kill you if it came to that.” With the jury out amongst Icelanders, the future of whales and whaling in its waters remains uncertain.
