I'm reviewing LEGO's 21315 Pop Up Book, the 23rd LEGO Ideas set inspired by fan designers Grant Davis and Jason Allemann from JK Brickworks. It's a working LEGO pop up book that includes Jack and the Beanstalk and Red Riding Hood pop up scenes and minifigures of the Wolf, Little Red Riding Hood, her Grandmother and the Giant plus Jack microfigure to climb the LEGO beanstalk to the giant's cloud castle.

LEGO's pop up book is a perfect brick built recreation that would not look out of place on a bookshelf. A sturdy hinge allows the book to open revealing a blank canvas into which you can snap pop up LEGO scenes of Jack and the Beanstalk and Little Red Riding Hood. These use simple but elegantly designed LEGO mechanics which allow Grandma's house, Jack's village and the beanstalk to emerge from the pop up book to create neat little fairy tale scenes.
Jack's beanstalk is a very neat piece of pop up LEGO engineering. The beanstalk uses a scissor mechanism anchored to the base of the book by string. When the book is opened, the string activates the scissor mechanism and the beanstalk complete with giant's castle at the top emerges from the LEGO pop up book.
The 21315 LEGO pop up book minifigure collection is stunning. Giant is a standard minifigure with a uniquely printed torso showing the golden goose, golden egg and a couple of LEGO skulls. The wolf is dressed in torn pajamas matching grandma's and has an awesome wolf head mold printed with details including grandma's lipstick and glasses. Grandma is dressed in the same pink pajamas and recycles parts used for a minifigure in the LEGO Creator Expert roller coaster. Jack is a printed microfigure but well executed in micro scale detail. Finally, Little Red Riding Hood is a really nice minifigure with custom printed skirt piece and two-tone hood.
The exterior of LEGO's pop up book has a premium bound feel with tiles to hide studs, although none on the top surface of the book which presumably was done to keep a sense of symmetry. The book has a 16x8 printed panel on the front entitled "Once Upon a Brick" with some nice gold metallic printing and the designers Grant Davis and Jason Alleman are immortalized on the cover with their names proudly displayed on printed tiles as the authors of this awesome LEGO pop up book.
