32% Illuminated Waning Crescent
Waning Crescent was the moon phase of June 12, 2023, Monday. Seen from Earth, the illuminated fraction of the Moon's surface was 32% and decreasing.
In this part of the lunar cycle, it gets closer and closer to the Sun as seen from Earth, and the night side of the Moon faces Earth with a thinner and thinner illuminated crescent.
The waning (shrinking) crescent Moon rose around midnight, transited the meridian after sunrise, before setting after noon. This phase was best seen 1-2 hours before sunrise and is the ideal time to see surface features of the Moon. Along the illuminated crescent, you could see the moon's craters and mountains casting long shadows.
The Waxing Gibbous phase, like all phases of the moon, lasts just over 7 days. The actual length varies due to the moon's elliptical orbit. During this Waxing Gibbous phase, the moon was rising in the east in mid to late afternoon and will be high in the eastern sky by sunset.
