Data released by China Railway Group on Saturday indicate that China's railway system sold over 22 million train tickets on Friday, marking the country's record-high single-day train ticket sales, amid approaching of the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday season.
Typically, Chinese people take the two separate traditional holiday as an opportunity to enjoy a long travel or to celebrate family reunion. This year is different in that the two festivals coincide to make up an eight-day holiday season running from Sept 29 to Oct 6, which will definitely boost China's travel demand and keep its railroad system busy.
"The passenger travel rush has caused strain on the transportation capacity of some regions in certain periods of time. In particular, on some popular travel routes, some trains with more suitable departure and arrival times or with shorter running times have become the first choice for many passengers, and the tickets to them are likely to be sold out in a second," said Shan Xinghua, deputy director of China State Railway Group's ticketing technology innovation center.
To facilitate train ticket sales for the extra-long holiday and to deal with possible breakdown of the ticketing system, China State Railway Group has decided to set the period of railway passenger transportation rush for the extra-long holiday to as long as 12 days running from Sept 27 to Oct 8, to fully cover the upcoming holiday with two extra days being left receptively at both the beginning and the end of the holiday. During the 12-day transportation rush, an estimated 190 million railway trips are expected to be handled.
According to the company's pre-selling rules, passengers can book the ticket for a train that departs 15 days later. Official data show that ticket sales from Sept 13 to 16 reached over 74 million, with the sales on Sept 15 alone hitting a record high of 22.87 million, indicating travelers have a high enthusiasm for unrolling their holiday from the first day of the holiday season.
To the Chinese, the mid-autumn festival means family reunion and harmony. It is celebrated when the moon is full, and Chinese people believe a full moon is a symbol of reunion, harmony, and happiness. The festival is held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunar calendar with full moon at night.
