Nancy shared some of her favorite tools in previous YouTube videos that included favorite cutting mats, rulers, rotary cutters, general quilting tools and hand-stitching tools. This time she wants to go through some of her favorite marking tools for fabric or to mark on her rulers.
Nancy starts with the marking pencil from Bohin that is truly her favorite. It is a mechanical pencil so the lead is always sharp. It has a 0.9 mm lead so it is strong enough not to break very often but fine enough to mark next to the ruler. Nancy draws a white line on the dark fabric that is very easy to see. The pencil comes with the white lead and a convenient refill with six extra leads. Additional refills are available in pink, green, and graphite. There is a small eraser on the pencil but Nancy rarely uses it since any of the colors easily wash out.
The Frixion pen is Nancy's next favorite marking tool. These pens were made for the office. When you write with the Frixion pen, you can remove your marks with the "eraser" which causes friction heating up the paper. A quilter figured out these pens are great for quilting. Nancy likes the Frixion pen with the clicker that doesn't have a cap to lose. There are lots of different colors available. You can make a mark, then using your iron and applying heat, the mark will disappear. You need to keep two things in mind when using this pen. First, if you are marking designs on fabric for quilting try to remember not to press the fabric or the marks will disappear. Second, there has been some controversy that the marks will reappear when the fabric gets cold. Nancy has never had the marks reappear. And there is some concern, since these pens haven't been around that long, that the ink will effect the fabric in the future. But Nancy is not worried about that. She really loves how easy these pens are to use for marking fabric.
The Dritz Fine Point Mark-B-Gone is another favorite of Nancy's. There is several different brands of this pen. This one has a hard tip that can be used right next to the ruler. There's also one with a felt tip. Nancy liked to use the felt tip when she did long arm quilting. She could draw a design and quilt it. Then spray it with water, wait a while and the ink would disappear. You can also wash the quilt when you are all done and the ink will wash out. There is a concern if you press the ink from this pen that it will become permanent. Nancy hasn't had this problem since she usually removes the blue markings with water before pressing.
The last marking tool is for marking on rulers. Nancy loves the Omnigrid Glow-Line Tape. It comes in a package of three rolls and three different transparent colors. They last a long time. You can put it anywhere on your ruler where you want to see the marks and then you can easily take it off. Nancy loves to use the tape when she power cuts fabric.
These are some of Nancy's favorite marking tools. Please check out the other videos of Nancy's favorite tools on the OnPoint-TV YouTube channel.
