A line of thunderstorms is bringing heavy rain and strong winds to portions of Northwest Texas and the Big Country early this evening. The line of storms has shown some weakening tendencies over the last hour, but portions do remain capable of producing wind gusts over 60 miles per hour. Heavy rain and small hail are also ongoing, with flooding not out of the realm of possibility. Those storms will continue moving east at 30 to 45 miles per hour, while slowly weakening as they enter western North Texas by 10 PM. Scattered storms may continue into North Texas, Texoma, and Northeast Texas Saturday morning with small hail, frequent lightning, gusty winds, and heavy rain.
Further south into the Edwards Plateau, a cluster of severe storms extends from north of Loma Alta, near Juno, southwest to Langtry on Highway 90 in Val Verde County. A large tornado was observed about an hour ago east of Sanderson, near Dryden, but that tornadic circulation has moved into northern Mexico (for now). We'll need to monitor the storms carefully as they move east/southeast toward Del Rio, Carta Valley, Brackettville, and Spofford in the 9-10PM timeframe for tornado potential. Damaging hail and strong winds are also occurring. These storms will begin weakening by midnight as they continue pushing toward Interstate 35 in South-Central Texas - probably dying out near I-35 early Saturday morning.
