Schools across England reopened on Monday in the first step of Boris Johnson’s roadmap out of lockdown. Primary and secondary school pupils returned to classrooms with the aid of mass testing.
However, Boris Johnson was warned by experts the return of in person teaching could push the r-rate of coronavirus above one, meaning the pandemic would be expanding. Though the prime minister has stuck with his reopening plan which also sees people now being able to meet friends outdoors socially.
Despite opposition to staff returning to schools from some teaching unions, ministers have confirmed classrooms are safe, and teachers are at no greater risk of catching the virus than those working in any other job. Pupils have missed out on months of in-person learning, instead relying on online classes. Parents have raised concerns about children lacking social contact and the impact of lockdown on their overall learning.
Ministers will hope this time students will return to school for good, as the country is vaccinated out of the pandemic. So far over 22 million people have received a jab as the PM has vowed to stick to his timetable for reopening, which will see outdoor sports allowed again at the end of this month.
