YouTube sets video resolution according to your Internet speed.
If you have a high-speed Internet connection, the video should be able to play in HD resolution.
Let's see if this is true.
We have an Internet speed of about 50Mbps here.
However, when we try to play a YouTube video we get only 480p resolution.
This clearly shows that some YouTube videos will play in a lower resolution although you have a fast Internet connection.
How do you set any YouTube video to play in HD resolution by default?
In other words, how do you change the default video resolution to 720p or 1080p?
If you're on a computer, you can't change the YouTube default setting to HD resolution.
You would have to do it manually for each video.
Click on Quality and manually choose a higher resolution.
You'll notice that the lower auto resolution has been changed to whatever HD resolution you choose.
Manually setting a video resolution is fine if you're watching a video or two.
What if you watch dozens of videos each time you visit YouTube?
You can't be manually changing the resolution for each video, can you?
So, is there a way to prevent a video from defaulting to auto 480p every time you watch a YouTube video?
Unfortunately, there's no HD setting option on YouTube for desktop computers.
The good news, however, is there's a workaround.
For it to work, you would have to use the Chrome browser.
On a Chrome browser, visit the Chrome Store.
Once there, search for Auto Quality for YouTube.
Install the extension.
Click on Add to Chrome.
You may want to learn more about the extension.
Next, click on the extension icon and pin it to your browser.
Next, click on the extension icon and choose Options.
Under Default Quality, set your preferred video resolution.
You may choose from the following options.
We shall choose 1080p.
Next, hit Save.
Go to YouTube and play a video.
You'll notice that the video resolution has switched from Auto 480p to 1080p.
Although this is an automatic resolution you may still change it manually.
That's how you stop YouTube from changing video resolution automatically.
Now, go ahead and give the steps a try.
