France's biggest theatre festival celebrates its 50th birthday
Every year between July 10th and August 2nd, hundreds of theatre
troupes and thousands of spectators flock to the south of France to the medieval city of Avignon for a dose of the latest in French and international theatre. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the festival which is divided into two sections; the official "IN" programme of plays staged in such prestigious venues as the Palais des Papes, and the unofficial fringe selection known as "OFF" which is open to any theatre company with the will power and means to make it to Avignon. Among the quirkier offerings in the "OFF" section were Maria Bonzanigo and Nicola Marinoni from the Teatro Sunic who created a wedding parade in the streets of Avignon in order to sell their show, "Percossi Obligati". Japanese performer,Taroyukitake used the crowds in the street as the perfect participants in his "Living Museum of Art". Letting spectators paint his body, he then took the opportunity to dab a bit of paint on their faces himself, before imitating some of the world's most famous paintings and sculptures. Last but not least, the french company "Arketal" brought puppets to life in their show, "Le Monde En Vaut La Peine", in part based on the drawings and paintings of artist, Fernand Leger.
