The Canadian Armed Forces arrived in Newfoundland and Labrador on Jan. 19, 2020 to help residents dig out from under the mounds of snow that were dumped on the province on Friday, Jan. 17 by a major winter storm.
Various battalions are being sent out to different parts of the province to assist in the clearing of snow and the federal government said Sunday they would work with the province to determine where assistance is most needed.
One group of members helped dig out several vehicles at a parking lot on Monday, Jan. 20 that were stuck under several centimetres of the white powder, while other groups were dispatched to help various people who had put in requests for help digging out of their own homes.
Some parts of the province saw up to 93 centimetres of snow and Environment Canada says St. John's International Airport recorded the highest daily snowfall its seen - 78 centimetres - since at least 1942, when record-keeping began.
