The melody for this song dates back to 1934. The lyrics went through a series of rewrites, and after a fourth "commercialized"
version of the lyrics were done, the song was retitled to "Blue Moon". Although recorded by well known singers of the day including Elvis Presley, The Marcels do-wop upbeat version of the song turned it into a #1 hit on both the Billboard Pop and R&B charts in 1961 selling over a million copies and earning a gold disc. The group actually recorded "Blue Moon" at the last minute simply because they needed a fourth song to complete an album they were working on. After the recording, a promoter obtained a copy of the song and passed it on to legendary New York City DJ "Murray The K" who played it 26 times on one show. The song is one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. The famous introduction for the song was borrowed from the routine the group had in their act. Also, The Marcels arrangement of the song was strongly influenced by a 1958 recording of a song called "Zoom Zoom Zoom" by The Collegians.
