When it comes to choosing the best hunting binoculars there are a ton of things to consider. This video from Clay Hayes explains some of the basic attributes of binoculars as well as things to consider when choosing the best pair for your needs.
Like with many things there are a lot of tradeoffs you’ll need to consider when looking for a pair. Field of view, magnification, low light performance, budget, how you’ll be using them most often, etc. There are two very different ways to use your binoculars for hunting. One is to make small things big, such as a deer or elk on a far off hillside or a small bird in a tree just a few yards away. The other, less obvious way, is to use them to look “through” brush and vegetation relatively close by. For close quarters hunting a lower power binocular will be much more useful than a higher power. The field of view will be wider, low light performance better, they’re lighter and easier to hold steady by hand.
For glassing at distance then a higher power will be more useful. But keep in mind that more magnification also means the binoculars will be harder to hold steady by hand. Most people can hold a 8x bino steady by hand, a 10x is a little more difficult but still manageable, a 12x is downright difficult. If you’re using a 12x binocular you should seriously consider mounting them on a tripod.
Personally I like the Razor HD 10x42 from Vortex Optics. They have enough magnification to effectivly glass a distant hillside but still have a wide enough field of view for close hunting. By using my longbow as a monopod I can hold them very steady for a quick look.
