(26 Nov 2021) French President Emmanuel Macron arrived at the Vatican on Friday morning to meet with Pope Francis, after signing a treaty with Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
Macron's car pulled up in the courtyard of St Damasco at the Vatican where the French President was welcomed by Monsignor Leonardo Sapienza, head of the papal household.
A Swiss Guard platoon stood at attention in their raincoats and an assistant held an umbrella over Macron as he made his way into the Apostolic Palace.
The French President arrived in Italy on Thursday evening. He was greeted by Italian President Sergio Mattarella at the Quirinale Palace and later met with Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
On Friday morning Italy and France signed a treaty that will strengthen their bilateral ties on key subjects like defence and economy.
Macron's visit comes as a battle of words heats up between him and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson following the death of 27 migrants who lost their lives this week attempting to cross the English channel.
