Britain has recorded its lowest death toll from coronavirus in seven months as experts play down the possibility of a deadly third wave.
Just four COVID-19 deaths were reported on Monday across the UK, representing a major decline in deaths from Britain’s coronavirus peak on 19th January, when 1,360 people were reported to have died. Recorded cases of the virus are also shrinking rapidly, with infections falling by 17% in the last week.
The UK has seen one of the fastest falls in coronavirus deaths worldwide after its successful vaccination programme. British health authorities became the first in the world to approve the Pfizer vaccine in December and have since inoculated more than two-thirds of its adult population with at least one dose of the vaccine. On Monday over 10 million people were reported to have received two doses of the jab, meaning they are now fully protected against the virus.
Vaccines have been proven to be 100% effective in preventing severe cases and deaths from COVID-19 once enough antibodies have been built up, which usually takes a matter of weeks after receiving an injection.
Health officials believe the possibility of a deadly third wave of coronavirus hitting the UK is unlikely, though some concerns remain that mutated forms of the virus may pose a threat if they are resistant to vaccines. Because of this threat, the government has banned international travel unless for essential purposes, and have restricted entry to people from abroad by forcing them to take several coronavirus tests and to temporarily isolate on arrival.
Ministers are confident that Boris Johnson’s roadmap to freedom will stay on track, as the next lockdown milestone approaches on 17th May, when meetings indoors will be allowed.
