Hi. I’m Dr. Caplan at Helios Telemedicine for Longevity. Dihydrotestosterone, DHT, is not just an androgen, it is the strongest androgenic steroid hormone made by the body. Its effects are anywhere from 5-10 times that of testosterone, but they are very localized. It is very important in the development of male genitalia during fetal development and secondary male traits in puberty, but that’s where most of its benefits seem to stop. In fact, in adults, it mostly just affects the tissues where it is made, mainly the prostate, skin, body hair, and scalp hair. The DHT blood levels we can test is mostly made in the liver and brain, so it really doesn’t relate to what the local hormone is doing. Locally made DHT causes enlargement of the prostate and some prostate cancers, activation of sebaceous glands in the skin, and male-pattern hair loss. Medications to block can reduce or relieve these issues. In women, it is associated with polycystic ovary syndrome. Some suggest using it to treat male testosterone deficiency, but it is not available in the US.
