Inside The $10 Million Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 Private Jet
0:00 - Intro
Ten years after the first model rolled off the production line, Textron Aviation has unveiled an upgrade to the venerable jet, the Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen 2. While the performance specifications of the airplane are unchanged, the company incorporated substantial improvements surrounding the cabin experience. Here is everything you need to know about the Cessna CJ4 Gen2.
0:30 - Cabin
The CJ4 Gen2 features a much-improved entry stair design. Not only are the stairs lighted, but also feature a sturdy handrail, an additional step for easier entry, and a projected lower step floodlight that can display a design of your choice. Walking through the cabin is easy since the seats and armrests can be pushed right against the cabin walls. The completely redesigned seats are extremely comfortable and swivel to provide optimum positioning. Tray tables fold out from the side walls, and there are plenty of power ports in the cabin and cockpit, both USB and standard.
The cabinetry is impressive and has an optional AC outlet with enough power to accommodate a coffee maker or standard coffee warming tank. Pilot storage cabinets have been redesigned for easier access from the seats. The new galley also has a slide-out countertop to make preparation easier. The surface can be upgraded to granite from a laminate, with a small weight penalty. Owners can also choose between cabinets or side-facing seat combinations, accommodating up to two passengers, installed opposite the entry door.
One of the first features you notice is the improved lighting that literally bathes the interior in light. While bleed air provides heat and pressurization, the air conditioning is an electrically operated vapor-cycle machine.
As you venture aft, the standard externally-serviced lavatory has been improved in the Gen2, including the implementation of two Lee Aerospace CoolView skylights. An optional sink with running water is installed as well.
Textron Aviation implemented a software-based cabin management system that can control the window shades, dimmable LED lighting, Sirius/XM audio radio, and even the cabin temperature.
3:35 - Cockpit
The flight deck of the CJ4 Gen2 features the Collins Pro line 21 avionics suite. All of the controls and systems are within easy reach of either pilot, making single or crew operation seamless. One example is the landing gear control, intelligently located between the pilots on the panel.
The Pro Line 21 in the CJ4 features two Multi Function Displays and a total of four huge 8 x 10-inch displays. An additional feature is extensive embedded electronic checklists that facilitate operation.
The Pro Line 21 in the CJ4 allows the pilot to obtain digital Automatic Terminal Information Service, or ATIS, and pre-departure clearances. Landing elevation is automatically set to schedule the pressurization system for the destination airport in a flight plan. Pro Line 21 offers live traffic and weather, as well as full navigation capabilities including departure and arrival procedures. The system delivers the applicable V-speeds for departure to be entered for display on the Primary Flight Display.
The electrically heated windshield has been standard on the CJ4 since 2010, which eliminates any condensation issues. The FJ44-4A engines are fadec-controlled, making the startup very simple. Just push the start and run buttons, monitor the gauges and CAS messages, and away you go.
6:01 - Engine and Performance
The CJ4 is powered by two Williams FJ44-4A engines with a TBO of 5,000 hours and with each one producing 3,621 lbs of thrust. This combination is able to push the aircraft to a maximum cruise speed of 451 knots and up to a maximum cruising altitude of 45,000 feet or 13,7 kilometers, with an average hourly fuel burn of 180 gallons or 681 liters per hour.
The CJ4 has a maximum range of 2,165 nautical miles, which is 2,500 miles or 4,010 kilometers. The plane can take off in 3,410 feet or 1,040 meters, has a maximum rate of climb of 3,850 feet or 1,175 meters per minute, and a landing distance of 2,940 feet or 900 meters, all while maintaining a maximum payload of 2,220 lbs or 1,010 kilograms and a full fuel payload of 1,122 lbs or 510 kilograms.
7:16 - Purchase and Charter Price
The base purchase price for the CJ4 is $9.7 million before options, and the charter price ranges from $2,800 to $3,400 per hour.
7:28 - Operating Cost
While the total fixed cost is roughly $450,000 per year, the average hourly operating cost is estimated at $2,000 to $2,400.
