Sir Lady Java, whose birth name is William March Jones, is a notable figure in the history of LGBTQ+ rights and entertainment. She was a transgender performer, specifically a transgender woman, and a prominent transgender activist during the 1960s and 1970s.
Sir Lady Java's life and work exemplify the resilience and strength of transgender individuals who stood up against systemic discrimination and played a vital role in advancing LGBTQ+ rights and visibility. She is celebrated as a pioneer in the struggle for transgender rights and equality.
Hailie Sahar, known for her role in "Pose," will play the lead in an upcoming biopic directed by Anthony Hemingway. The biopic will focus on Sir Lady Java, a famed trans rights activist and exotic dancer. Sir Lady Java, a beloved figure in the 1960s nightclub scene, performed alongside icons like James Brown and Lena Horne. However, her career was hindered by a discriminatory city ordinance known as "Rule Number 9," which criminalized cross-dressing in Los Angeles. Undeterred, she led a movement, supported by the ACLU, to challenge the law. In 1969, after two years of activism, she successfully lobbied the California Supreme Court to overturn "Rule Number 9."
The California Alliance for Retired Americans (CARA) is a statewide nonprofit organization that unites retired workers and community groups to win social and economic justice, full civil rights, and a better, more secure future for ourselves, our families, and future generations.
