STORYLINE:
Friday prayers were held in Beirut as the Israeli military bombarded lebanon for a 17th day.
A Sheikh who addressed worshippers said the time "in which Israel was able to attack and kill wherever and whenever it wants is gone."
In Beirut's southern suburbs the destruction wrought by Israel is clear to see - ruins of buildings are still smouldering.
Up to 600 civilians are believed to have been killed in the Israeli offensive in Lebanon, with 382 confirmed dead and the rest either known to be buried under the rubble of buildings or missing, the Lebanese health minister said on Friday.
The confirmed civilian deaths added to tolls released by the Lebanese army and Hezbollah guerrillas, which are not included in the ministry's count, would bring the confirmed total to at least 437 killed in the campaign.
The 382 figure is known because the bodies have arrived at hospitals, Health Minister Muhammed Jawad Khalifeh said.
Khalifeh said another 58 are known to be buried under the rubble.
Israel launched its military bombardment against Lebanon's population, infrastructure and Hezbollah guerrillas on July 12th in response to the guerrillas' capture of two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border attack.
Since then, Israeli planes have bombed Hezbollah headquarters, officials and hideouts in south and east Lebanon, and the southern suburbs of Beirut - a Hezbollah stronghold that has been badly hit by airstrikes.
Roads, bridges, seaports and runways at Beirut International Airport have also been targeted in an attempt to pressure the Lebanese government to rein in Hezbollah.
However the relentless bombing has so far failed to force the release of the two soldiers or halt the daily barrage of Hezbollah rockets into northern Israeli towns.
