The former Soviet Union took the problem of relic hominins so seriously that they formed a commission of top-ranking scientists to study them.
The Centre for Fortean Zoology traveled to the Caucasus Mountains on the track of these hairy wildmen, possibly a robust offshoot of Homo erectus or Homo habilis.
Teaming up with Russian and Ukrainian researchers they searched the mountains and forests for the beast. New evidence in the form of DNA analysis and new fossil discoveries are pouring more light on the riddle of wildmen worldwide and the CFZ are planning another trip later this year, this time to former Soviet Central Asia.
