STORYLINE:
Kosovo's Prime Minister met with representatives of the UN and NATO in Pristina on Tuesday to discuss the current security situation in Kosovo.
Prime Minister Hashim Thaci urged calm in the lead-up to a declaration of independence being prepared.
"We are in the final stages of the declaration. Now, Kosovo has a preventive plan with UN and NATO authorities", he told a joint news conference after the meeting. "All necessary steps have been taken for the purpose of maintaining a safe and secure situation for all people in Kosovo while respecting the territorial integrity of Kosovo."
Thaci said last week that Kosovo's declaration of independence could be days away.
Joachim Rucker, the Special Representative of United Nations Mission in Kosovo, said; "We jointly will make sure that the next weeks and months will be weeks and months of peace and stability in Kosovo. We have full trust in the people of Kosovo who will react responsibly in the next weeks and months when we expect obviously that important events will take place."
The European Union wants to send a policing and administrative mission to Kosovo to replace the UN mission, which took control alongside NATO peacekeepers in 1999 after the war between Serbian troops and ethnic Albanian separatists ended.
Kosovo's ethnic Albanian leaders had been expected to declare independence in February or March.
Kosovo's independence is supported by the United States and most EU members, including Britain and France.
But Serbia and its ally Russia strongly oppose independence for the province.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Friday he could not yet give his blessing to a planned 1800-strong EU policing mission in Kosovo because of the international dispute over the province's future.
NATO's Kosovo force, known as KFOR, recently boosted patrols and deployed extra troops, mostly Germans and Americans, in the province's tense north, where most of the Serbs live.
