Santa Clarita, CA – January 11, 2023: A late-night confrontation outside a shopping center on Valencia Boulevard escalated into a fatal deputy-involved shooting. Deputies responded to reports of a man, identified as 50-year-old Christopher Lee Mercurio, trespassing and refusing to leave. When approached by Deputy Lorena Gonzalez, Mercurio threatened her, punched her in the face, and continued advancing despite warnings.
In self-defense, Deputy Gonzalez fired, striking Mercurio, who later died at the hospital. The deputy sustained injuries but was treated and released. No other injuries occurred. The incident is under investigation by the California Department of Justice per Assembly Bill 1506 guidelines.
