Bio of the panelists:
Dr Mala Ramanathan
Dr. Mala Ramanathan is a Statistician-Demographer with training in Medical Anthropology and Bioethics. She is currently on the faculty of the Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies, SCTIMST, Thiruvananthapuram, India. She is a member of the Ethics committee of the Institute for Research in Medical Statistics, ICMR, New Delhi and Health Action by People, Thiruvananthapuram.
Her current focus of work is Maternal and Child Health, Gender and Chronic Morbidity (with special reference to Diabetes Mellitus), and Ethics in Health Research. She is on the Editorial Board of the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics, an indexed peer reviewed journal of the Forum for Medical Ethics Society, Mumbai. Dr. Ramanathan has several publications including papers, book reports, and chapters related to areas of her interest.
Dr Rajan Sankar
Dr. Rajan Sankar is Founding Director at The India Nutrition Initiative (TINI) and Senior Advisor for Nutrition at Tata Trusts. Prior to joining the Trusts, Dr. Sankar was country manager, India and Regional Representative, South Asia, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), and supported GAIN’s program development and grant management in India. Prior to joining GAIN, Dr. Sankar was a project officer in the Child Development and Nutrition section of UNICEF in India. In 2001, he retired as Colonel from the Indian Army Medical Corps after 24 years of service. He is a graduate in medicine from the University of Madras with a specialisation in internal medicine and endocrinology. He has published over 100 scientific papers in national and international journals.
Dr Mukta Gundi
Dr. Mukta Gundi is an Asssitant Professor at the Azim Premji University and a public health researcher interested in exploring how social conditions influence health. Her interests include understanding how social and gender inequalities intersect to impact adolescents’ health indicators. A doctoral student at IIT Gandhinagar, Dr. Gundi worked as a Technical Specialist with the Population Council, New Delhi. She co-led baseline data collection for a community-based evaluation programme aimed at skilling in-school and out-of-school adolescent girls to reduce the incidences of child marriage in Rajasthan. Her research work included contributing to an evidence synthesis of experimental studies from South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa that were aimed at delaying marriage, reducing teenage pregnancies, and improving labour force participation among adolescent girls and young women. She has also co-authored research briefs, analyzed data, designed research tools, and supervised data collection.
