Where does the sur come from? From the bansuri or from you? Have you ever wondered if you are in really in sur?

Understanding the sur and seeing the sur is a very important step that most teachers miss out in the hurry to teach songs and copy compositions. Only once you understand sur and listen to them, will you be able to play them on your bansuri.

So, can sur be taught? After many years of working with students, I am convinced that once you learn how to find the sur you yourself will be in sur.

A good guru's job is to guide you in a way that you learn how to find the sur for yourself.

The most important thing I can tell you is to learn to understand how to find your sur by understanding the samvaad between the various sounds that can be defined as sur.

Once you to understand this samvaad between surs, you yourself will be able to see these surs and be able to play them on your bansuri.
