Like all of us, Jesus began as a tiny, tiny baby inside his mother.
As Catholics, we respect life, from the very start -- when we are just tiny, tiny babies inside our moms -- until we are old, old people. Catholics respect life from when it begins, because a person’s a person, no matter how small.
All human life is sacred, because human life is created in the image and likeness of God.
Do you know how long 13 weeks is? Do you remember when we planted the little crocus bulbs next to the church? That was 13 weeks ago. That was not so long ago. After a baby has been inside its mom for 13 weeks, from the top of the baby's head to the bottom of the baby's butt, the baby is about three inches long.
The baby's heart beats. The baby has fingers and toes. The baby can open and close its hands. The baby has lips, and a nose, and eyes, and eyelids. The teeth already have formed inside the baby's jaw bone. The baby's fingerprints are forming -- the same fingerprints the baby will have at 6 weeks old, and at 6 years old, and at 60 years old. If you saw the baby, you could tell whether it was a boy or a girl. Inside the mother, the baby can turn somersaults and stretch out. And that's at only 13 weeks after the baby was made.
The picture on the screen is a real picture of a real baby just 14 weeks after creation. There are special cameras that can take pictures -- photographs -- of babies when they are inside their moms. The pictures are called "ultrasound images." Almost certainly, every one of you had a picture like this taken when you were inside your mom. If you ask your mom, I'll bet she still has the ultrasound picture of you. This picture was taken by a doctor named Dr. Omori; he lives in a country called "Brazil," in South America. He takes pictures like this and puts them online, and that's where I found the picture. From the top of the baby's head to the bottom of the baby's butt, it's three inches long. You can see where the doctor drew an outline around the baby's leg and around the baby's arm. And the doctor drew around the baby's ear. And you can see the baby's nose.
Then, by the time the baby has been inside the mommy for six months (half a year), the baby is about the size of this doll. The doll is inside a shoe box. You can tell how big the doll is because you know how big a shoe box is. And a baby that has been inside its mother for six months would look pretty much like this doll. But the baby would be skinnier, and the baby's knees would be bent and curled up onto its tummy. Most babies would be inside their moms for another three months.
We are Catholics, and we respect life, from the beginning until the end.
