Out of the worlds top 150 crop plants, none come from Australia. However, there exists tremendous potential with in excess of 1,500 edible plants having been used by indigenous cultures for millennia. But if native foods are to become mainstream, we need to start developing a taste, demand and supply chain for these ancient products. A prosperous Australian native food industry is possible only if it is built in partnership between Indigenous and non-Indigenous players. This panel discussion will outline the Indigenous knowledge and botanical context for native foods and explore how partnerships are working to develop a new global industry.
