Most people are stalked by someone they know—usually by a current or former intimate partner. Statistics also show that young people between the ages of 18 to 24 experience the highest rate of stalking.
Stalking can really disrupt a victim’s life. That’s why it’s an issue we take very seriously in the City Attorney’s office. In fact, we have an entire unit dedicated to domestic violence and stalking crimes.
Stalking is defined as a pattern of conduct of two or more incidents closely related in time that causes mental distress or fear of physical harm. It can include:
• Following or watching.
• Unwanted telephone calls.
• Unwanted mail or gifts.
• Inappropriate approaches or physical contact.
• Unwanted contact via the internet.
• Appearing anywhere you may be for no legitimate reason.
• Threats to your health or safety.
• Threats against family or friends.
• Damage to physical property.
• And physical violence.
If you’re a victim of any of these unwanted behaviors, please realize that it's not your fault.
Report all incidents to the police and request that an official report is made. You can also come to my office to file a complaint and talk to one of our representatives about safety planning and what your options are.
