Illegal mining, a perilous reality in South Africa, has drawn intense government attention as authorities strive to curb the dangers faced by thousands of "zama zamas" risking their lives for gold and diamonds. This week, a major sweep in Orkney led to the arrest of 540 miners, with authorities blocking food and water access to encourage them to leave the area. This is part of a wider crackdown effort that has seen over 13,690 arrests since December 2023. The risks became tragically clear earlier this year when thirty miners were found dead in Welkom due to hazardous mining conditions, including the presence of deadly methane gas. As South Africa grapples with the complexities of illegal mining and abandoned mines, questions arise about the government’s ability to protect vulnerable citizens.
