It's important to note that not everyone who says these phrases is automatically a gaslighter. Gaslighting is intentional and the abuser knows what they're doing.
Get some space from the conversation.
Seek out trusted opinions and feedback.
Focus on restoring trust in your own opinions and thoughts.
"What did I do to you?" - The gaslighter denies the impact they had on you and is forcing you to question it.
"Everyone around you isn't the problem, the problem is you." - The gaslighter makes you feel like you are the problem, even when you are the victim.
"I'm sorry you feel that way." - The gaslighter does not apologize for their actions, instead they make you feel like you are the problem.
"I don't remember saying that. I think you made that up." - The gaslighter intentionally gets you to question your own experience, behavior, and thoughts.
"It's your anxiety that made me do the things I do." - The gaslighter uses your anxiety as a reason to justify their own negative behavior.
"You need help." - The gaslighter implies that you are the problem and need to address your issues instead of them having to work through their own issues.
"It's your fault." - The gaslighter neglects any responsibility for their actions or a situation, instead directly blaming others.
"You're overreacting." - This is an attempt to dismiss and invalidate the feelings and concerns of the person being gaslit. By saying that the person is overreacting, the gaslighter is trying to make the person believe that their emotions and experiences are unreasonable or exaggerated.
"That never happened." - This statement is a denial of the person's memories and experiences. The gaslighter is trying to manipulate the person into thinking they are mistaken or imagining things.
"You're too sensitive." - Similar to "you're overreacting," this statement is meant to dismiss the person's feelings and experiences. By calling the person "too sensitive," the gaslighter is trying to make the person believe that their emotions and experiences are unwarranted or unreasonable.
