Attracting bees to the garden is easy, but the best way depends on the garden, this blue bush in the garden on some years will see 40 to 60 bees on it in a go however, the bees will not go to other parts of the garden. In my veg garden I use heathers that attract insects and bees and chives. Chives are purple in colour and are close to the optimum colour of blue to attract bees. Bees see to like blue, then bright yellow then purple flowers.
The honey bee colony can reach upwards of 60,000 bees in summer, a bumble bee nest will range from 20 to 300 bees, but 20 to 50 bees is the norm.
The bumble bee nest in my garden has many bees that have bee killed in it, this could mean an attack from the cuckoo bee.
But regardless the bee pollination needs flowers and high nectar plants to survive so plant your garden well, and depending on the flowering times of plants and shrubs you could attract bees to pollinate your fruit and veg and you could give bees a feast latter on in the season with this highly sort after bee friendly shrub that will surely help them get their honey supply's up:)
This shrub here is a ceanothus or concha its a evergreen with spring / early summer flowers. it has won the r.h.s award of garden merit, it is also know as California lilac. grows up to 2.4 metres in height and does not like being moved when established. This plant in england for sure draws so many bees to it that the bees have no interest in the rest of the garden.
Deinately if you just want to attract bees then this californian lilac would do the job and for butterflys the buddleja, or butterfly tree.
