Joint custody can absolutely affect the way child support is calculated. The custody award itself determines how the child support statutes are applied. If a parent has joint physical custody, child support is based on the differential in the income of both of the parents. If one parent has primary custody, then child support is only based on the obligor, meaning the parent who doesn't have custody, the obligor's income. Having joint custody can oftentimes reduce the amount of support that a parent has to pay because it's simply based on the comparison of the incomes.
